Food & Wine

Within such a diverse landscape coupled with abundant water, Strathbogie Shire produces great food and fantastic wine.

Wine lovers will be in heaven with two distinct climatic regions within a stone's throw and each producing a wide range of grapes. The Nagambie Lakes, home to renowned wineries like Tahbilk Estate and Mitchelton Estate, has a history stretching back to the 1850's with successful vintages like shiraz, rousanne and viognier.

Newer to the scene and just as exciting is the cooler Strathbogie Ranges region. Wine makers are taking the advantage of rich soils and high altitudes to create elegant chardonnay, riesling and pinot nior.

While many Strathbogie wineries have no official cellar door; many local restaurants and produce stores proudly stock and serve their wines, along with local fare such as prime meats, organic herbs and freshly-picked nuts, olives, preserves, pickles, cheeses and jams.

Discover local produce at markets held monthly in Avenel, Violet Town and Nagambie, or at pick-your-own operators. Don’t be surprised to return with boxes of sun-warmed tomatoes, organic vegetables or dark, plump cherries.
